India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and opener Gautam Gambhir on Sunday longed for Yuvraj Singh’s quick recovery and hoped the left-hander would overcome health issues and make a strong comeback.Yuvraj is currently undergoing chemotherapy in the US, for a malignant tumour in between lungs.”He will get well soon, he is someone who loves challenges and I believe he will come out strong,” Dhoni said about Yuvraj after leading his side to a four-wicket win over Australia in the ODI tri-series.Gambhir too wished for the left-hander’s qucik recovery to the Indian team.”There is a message for a very good friend. We want Yuvraj to get well soon. This is the place where he belongs and we are missing him a lot,” Gambhir, who was named the man of the match for his knock of 92, said.Needing 13 to win in the final over, Dhoni smashed Clint McKay for a massive six, which helped India to eventually seal the issue and the skipper said it was special shot.”This six was very special. This was the match when we needed that six. The World Cup six was also special but we could have done that with singles,” Dhoni said.India have recorded their second consecutive win but Dhoni felt shot selection still required improvement.”You have to analyse whether you should be playing that shot. There were a few shots we shouldn’t have played in this game so we need to work on that,” he said.Dhoni said the plan was to take the game till the end.advertisement”I told Suresh (Raina) that let’s take the game till the end. That was the time they were bowling well. So the idea was to take the game till the end and make use of the bad deliveries.”Dhoni also said that his team is taking things one game at a time.”It’s always great to be in the top 2, but it’s important to take one game at a time, no need to think about the finals. We need to now concentrate one game at a time,” Dhoni said.Gambhir was relieved to have beaten the Aussies for the first time in the series.”It was an important match for us against Australia, and I have happy to be contributing to the team’s success. Any runs in Australia is special.”As for Dhoni’s gigantic six, Gambhir said, “Dhoni is a good finisher and he stays calm and that’s important in those situations.”Australian captain Michael Clarke said they they were 10-20 runs short.”We were 10-20 short and the fielding was sloppy.”Clarke had a word of praise for Dhoni, who finished it off for India.”I have saying for a long time, the entire summer. He (Dhoni) played that innings beautifully and full credit to him Dhoni is a very good one-day player,” Clarke said. The Australian skipper was also happy for Peter Forrest who made 66 on debut.”Great to see Forrest get an opportunity, he made the most of it.””The last two games have been tight. Now it’s about how we come back in Sydney.”
This being an Olympic year, a lot was expected from the Union Budget as far as fund allocation for sports was concerned but Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s total package of Rs 1,152 crore may not please many, including the sports federations. As compared to last year’s Budget in which Rs 1,121 crore was allocated to the Sports Ministry and was later revised to Rs 990 crore, this year’s Budget for sports shows a nominal hike of Rs 162 crore. Out of the total outlay, Rs 721.98 crore has been allocated for sports and games while Rs 310.22 crore has been earmarked for the Youth Welfare Scheme. The Budget has surely came as a disappointment for the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) which had requested the finance minister to consider allocating funds for sports in the range of Rs 4,000 crore. The Budget for sports in the last two years has seen a steep decline from Rs 3315.67 crore in 2010 and Rs 3,670.13crore in 2009. The Sports Authority of India (SAI), which often draws flak for it functioning, has been handed Rs 256 crore – a hike of just Rs 22 crore from last year’s Rs 236 crore. The lack of facilities at the various SAI centres in the country has often come in the limelight and frequently they have run short of food supplements for athletes.Out of the total Budget for the ministry amounting to Rs 1,152 crore, Rs 1,041 crore fall under the ‘plan’ expenditure while the rest (Rs 111 crore) is ‘nonplanned’. In its assistance to the various National Sports Federations, the government will shell out only Rs 110 crore which is an increase of just Rs 10 crore compared to last year’s Budget.advertisementAs expected, the IOA is not pleased with the funds allocated. “We expect our athletes to compete against the likes of Chinese and Americans but when it comes to investing money honour athletes, they give peanuts,” said IOA vice-president Tarlochan Singh.
Before the adrenaline-powered cricketing action takes over, the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League will announce itself with a star-studded night of music and dance in Chennai on Tuesday. This is for the first time that the IPL has scheduled the opening ceremony a day before the first game, and at a different ground altogether- the YMCA College of Physical Education.Headlining the night will be American pop star Katy Perry, who will belt out some of her No. 1 hits like Teenage Dream, Hot Cold and California Gurls. Bollywood and the cash-rich league have gone hand-in-hand over the last four years, and it will be no different this time either, with mega star Amitabh Bachchan , Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra set to perform on the night, dubbed IPL Opening Nite . One of Chennai’s favourite sons, the legendary dancer and actor Prabhu Deva, will also enthrall the crowd with his unique style, as will the reunited band Colonial Cousins, featuring Hariharan and Leslie Lewis, who created some memorable fusion numbers like Sa Ni Dha Pa in the 1990s.Tickets for the ceremony start at Rs.1,500, though not much information has been shared about the event by the organisers. The captains of all nine teams will provide the cricketing flavour to the event, when they sign the MCC’s Spirit of Cricket Pledge. The tournament proper will kick off on Wednesday with holders Chennai Super Kings taking on last year’s Champions League Twenty20 winners Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla, while announcing the Opening Nite last month, had said it was the league’s way of thanking the fans for their support.”With four highly successful seasons behind us, we hope to raise the standards of the competition even higher, as we look forward to celebrating DLF IPL 2012 with much fanfare, starting with Opening Nite. We want to thank all the supporters for their continued support as they have made the league what it is today,” he had said.advertisement

“Tiger must be there,” Johnson said. “Because there’s 40 people instead of four.”Golf Channel added an hour of coverage, and Twitter came alive with people curious about the latest return. That included Steph Curry, the Golden State Warriors’ two-time MVP who played a Web.com Tour event in August. “The wait is over. The wait is over,” he tweeted .Michael Phelps said he was “pumped to be watching” Woods on TV again. This event doesn’t draw big crowds, but most of them were with Woods to see how he would fare in this latest comeback, this one from fusion surgery on his lower back on April 20. Given it was his fourth surgery in three years, coupled with a DUI arrest in the summer that exposed the struggles Woods was having with pain medicine, a day like this seemed a long way off.Woods said he appreciated the moment Thursday morning.“I was in my head thanking all the people who have helped me in giving me a chance to come back and play this round again,” he said. “There were a lot of people who were instrumental in my life — friends, outside people I’ve never met before, obviously my surgeon. I was very thankful.”And he was as competitive as always.Woods delivered his first fist pump on par-4 fourth hole when he scooped a chip that didn’t reach the green, and then holed an 18-foot par putt. While the field is short, the competition is strong with eight of the top in the world at Albany. Woodsrealizes they have spent the last couple of years playing at a high level that allows them to overcome a few mistakes.“I don’t want to lose shots,” Woods said. “I haven’t played in a very long time and I can’t afford to go out there and make a bunch of bogeys and know that I can make nine, 10 birdies and offset them.” Russia signals rainbow flags tolerated at World Cup MRT 7 on track for partial opening in 2021 Don’t miss out on the latest news and information. He finished his round with a belly wedge from short of the 17th green because of mud on his ball, and holing a 6-foot par putt on the 18th.A year ago, Woods made a pair of double bogeys over the last three holes for a 73 to finish nine shots behind. Terry Walsh had recently guided India to a historic gold medal at the Asian GamesIndia’s chief hockey coach Terry Walsh on Tuesday sprang a surprise by resigning from his post because of a ‘pay dispute’, barely three weeks after guiding the team to a historic gold medal in the Asian Games in Incheon. The 60-year-old Australian, himself a noted Olympian, submitted his resignation in dramatic fashion, saying that he was finding it difficult to adjust to the decision making style of the sporting bureaucracy in the country.”I hereby tender my resignation as the Chief Coach, Indian Men’s Hockey Team, effective as per the details of my contract or as agreed to by all concerned parties,” Walsh said in a letter sent to SAI Director General Jiji Thomson on October 19.”I am finding considerable difficulty adjusting to the decision making style of the sporting bureaucracy in India which I believe, in the long term, is not in the best interests of Indian Hockey or it’s players,” said Walsh under whom India also won a silver in Glasgow Commonwealth Games. It is, however, learnt that Walsh and some other support staff were having some issues with the government over TDS (Tax Deduction at Source) on their salaries.Interestingly, Walsh also said that he would not like to continue with the top job on account of constant travelling with the team.”In addition to my difficulties with not being able to professionally operate within these bureaucratic confines, I am not willing to continue with the constant time away from my family in Australia. My current commitment places too much stress on my personal life.advertisement”Over the recent twelve month period I have become particularly attached to the playing group. In future years I would enjoy the prospect of retaining some involvement with the team and Indian Hockey,” said the former Olympian who was part of Australia’s silver winning team in 1976 Olympics.Walsh thanked the SAI for giving him an opportunity to work as head coach of the team.”May I thank you for the honour and opportunity to have worked with an Indian National Program for the last twelve months. I wish the Sports Authority of India every success as it builds into and beyond the 2016 Olympic Games,” he said.In an e-mail circulated to the media, Hockey India President Narinder Batra said that Walsh had issues with the SAI over his contract.”Besides other issues he (Walsh) has issues with his contract with SAI, which now after his resignation expires on 19.11.2014,” Batra said.”We suggest if SAI can have a re-look at his contract before 19.11.2014 so that he may continue till Olympic 2016.
